Baraza: Surprise KPL package Chemelil aiming higher

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) surprise package Chemelil Sugar FC are dreaming of scaling greater heights next season after gate crashing the established order this term.

Largely perceived as a mid-table team the 2003 domestic cup winners are on course for their best ever finish in over a decade and Head Coach Francis Baraza believes the squad has what it takes to pull off a major upset against KPL top dogs next season.

While perennial top guns such as AFC Leopards, Mathare United and Ulinzi Stars faltered along their campaigns, Chemu as they are fondly known have been steadfast and lie third behind Tusker and outgoing titleholders Gor Mahia FC with a game to go.

“This season has been incredible and the boys have really given their all. I am pleased, and I expect them to even get better next season,” Baraza told Citizen Digital.

Their season has, however, not been all rosy and after winning only one of their six opening fixtures threatened to plunge them into desperation.

And their turnaround all began with the appointment of Baraza in the latter stages of last season which they eventually finished 13th.

“I came in when the club was not doing so well but I was very committed to making my stay here a success. We had to restrategize before the start of this season and it’s now paying off,” Baraza said.

He attributes commitment and togetherness among his players as the foundation for their success while recognizing the club’s management for motivating the team and offering swift support whenever called upon.

“I have always believed in young players, and so when I came in I identified few of them and resolved to mentor them. I talked with the senior players in the dressing room and made it clear that they had to support the young players, if we had to have a good squad and challenge bravely,” he reiterated

It is the same their fine vein of form that got them to the round of 16 of GOtv Shield Tournament, where they got eliminated at the hands of the eventual runners-up Ulinzi.

“I am really hoping we win our last match, and finish third in the league. It will be a massive achievement and will surely spur them on to greater heights,” Baraza emphasised.

The fans have enjoyed one of their best seasons since the club got promoted to the top flight and their wish to see their team lift the KPL crown can surely not be too far-fetched.
