Barcelona blown away by Liverpool, admits Valverde

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde admits his side were “rolled over” and “blown away” by Liverpool in their Champions League semi-final second leg 4-0 defeat.

Divock Origi’s two goals either side of a double from Georginio Wijnaldum sealed Liverpool a memorable 4-0 win, putting them through to the Madrid final 4-3 on aggregate as Barcelona were left reeling.

Only four times in the tournament’s history has a side overturned a first-leg deficit of three goals or more to progress from a knockout tie.

“They have been really strong, they played really well and they kind of us rolled us over, really,” admitted Valverde.

“It is a terrible result for our fans and for ourselves but credit is due to Liverpool.

“You’re going to suffer, the fans will suffer as well. That’s what it is like. We didn’t expect a situation like this.

“You have to go through this penitence and we’ve not got long to go until the end of the league season.

“We’ve got the cup still to fight for and we’ve got to really finish the season well on a high after this.

“But at the moment we’re blown away, it’s terrible.”

Former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez echoed Valverde’s words, saying the team are in pain, and that the fourth goal scored by Origi from a quickly-taken Trent Alexander-Arnold corner was defended “like schoolboys.”

“We have to be ready for all the criticism that is going to rain down on us now. We are very sad, we are in a lot of pain.”

Suarez, who was jeered by Liverpool fans, added: “For their fourth goal we looked like schoolboys.”
