Barding hit Rwanda champs Hanika as Nginda lose

Kenya’s Barding High School beat Rwanda champions, Hanika TSS 2-0 in a boy’s football opening clash of the FEASSSA regional games at the Hill School Grounds on Monday morning in Eldoret.

Lameck Onyango and Hannington Odhiambo came from the bench to lift the Kenyans by hitting the target in the 75th minute and right at the death in the entertaining encounter to bag the three points.

In girls’ category, Kenya’s Nginda lost 1-0 to ETG of Burundi in their opener played at the second ground of the same school with a late goal doing all the damage.

Barding’s Ziko Kombo forced Hanika’s custodian Emmanuel Tuyisenge to save on full stretch in the opening minutes before a stinging shot from Keegan Ndemi was also parried out by the keeper for a fruitless corner.

The first real chance for the Rwanda champions came in the ninth, striker Haji Yakubu curling in a free kick outside the box that Barding’s keeper John Otieno had to punch out for a corner.

The George Owoko coached side responded immediately, James Omondi combining well with Trevor Omondi, and the latter was brought down just before he pulled trigger winning a free kick.

Dan Wakoli took the resultant set piece and found James Omondi who missed narrowly with a powerful header.

Unmarked Abubabakar Sadiki wasted a glorious opportunity shooting straight at Tuyisenge after being put through by Ziko in the 20th.

The Rwandese side then spurned two presentable chances, first Ngotanyi Amani lost his marker and Barding captain, John Odinga, only to shot wide with the keeper to beat before Josue Usabuwera wasted a one-on-one midway through the opening stanza.

Otieno then stopped Amani from giving Hanika the lead after the attacker was put through on goal by a pin-point cross from Sadi Habaguwira as the sides went in level at the break.

The end to end stuff continued after the restart without reward in front of goal before Onyango got the breakthrough with quarter of an hour to the 90 when he exploited a lapse of concentration in Hanika’s goal to notch the opener.

The goal motivated the Kenyans who lost to Laiser Hill of Nairobi in the national finals as they pressed forward to kill off the game.

Odhiambo sealed the victory when Barding caught Hanika on the counter in the final minute after they lost the ball upfront in their pursuit of the equaliser.

Barding play Kibuli SS of Uganda on Wednesday in their second match on while Nginda lock horns with Uganda’s Mukono on Tuesday.
