Barding overcome Kisumu Day to win Nyanza title

Barding High School are the new Lake Region champions after thumping hosts Kisumu Day 2-0 in a riveting boys’ Under-19 final played at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

Just like it was the case in their earlier Pool A opening meeting the game ended scoreless in standard time as both teams struggled to find their scoring form.

The build-up to the final was shrouded by the new of then finals contestants St Charles Lwanga Gesero being disqualified after they were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player in yesterday’s hotly contested semifinals against Kisumu Day.

According to the investigations carried out by the regional disciplinary committee, the player alias Samuel Michael alias Kados is overage having initially been registered under Kiendege Jets FC as a 19-year-old.

However, Barding ensured that they prevailed regardless of the opponent in the final.

Head Wellington Moruai told Citizen Digital that this victory is a culmination of hard work and dedication they have put into the game over the years.

“I joined the team in 2017 and am grateful that we have finally won the title this year.

This victory is significant since it sends that message to everyone out there that we are a great force in this region.” He said.

After seasons of near-misses previously, Mr. Moruai is happy that is charges have come full circle.

Also, he sees this achievement as an inspiration to the younger players coming up the ladder.

“Our form two and three class is doing well. This victory will make them believe that they can do it just like their seniors.” He added.

He sent a strong warning to other regional behemoths that barding will be a team to beat in the future.

“My aim now is to be the best coach in the region. Seeing my players develop and win the region is of great importance. I will aim to maintain their performance in the future.” He added.

Losing finalists Kisumu Day games master, Booker Odhiambo could only point out the positives from his team.

“The team played well, but unfortunately we lost in the finals. We stuck to our game plan and forced the game to go to extra time, but unfortunately, we lost.

Previously we have done well having won the trophy in 2013, 2014 and 2015. We missed in 2015, and last year we lost the finals to RInga.

This team has only two forms of fours. We are counting on the current lot to mature up and win it next year.” He observed.
