Bayern feel robbed by referee in Cup exit
Following Atletico Madrid’s away goals win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was not pleased with the performance of the referee.
The 60-year-old identified two moments in particular in which he thought the man in charge had let his side down, resulting in their third straight exit at the hand of a Spanish side.
“We are angry,” Rummenigge told reporters. “Atletico’s goal was offside and the foul by [Javi] Martinez on [Fernando] Torres, which led to the penalty, was outside of the area.
“We feel robbed. I think our team played well and deserved to win.”
The match, which Bayern won 2-1, was officiated by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir, and the CEO went further to question his suitability for the occasion.
“This referee has taken charge of two semi-finals in a week,” he continued. “I don’t know how this is possible.
“One UEFA delegate told me that he thought the way in which he [Cakir] performed was an embarrassment.”
