The best team lost, the defensive team won – Mourinho

Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho has criticised Arsenal for playing a defensive game during their FA Community Shield Clash played at Wembley on Sunday.

While congratulating Arsenal for their 1-0 win against his team, Mourinho said the Gunners abandoned their usual philosophy though noting that his side also lacked sharpness in the match.

“I have to say that the best team lost, the defensive team won,” he said.

The Chelsea manager claimed that Arsenal left their philosophy in the dressing room, and accumulated 10 players behind the ball all the time, playing the second half with nine players in front of the box.

“This is very good tactical organisation, and in that perspective, they scored one goal, they deserved to win, congratulations to them.”

Mourinho however accused Arsene Wenger of avoiding a handshake while remaining coy on why he did not make an effort to shake his hands.

Losers’ Medal

“Every Arsenal player came in my direction, which was the easiest thing to do because I was just there and if other people didn’t come in my direction that’s not a problem, that’s not a story, that’s not the end of the world.”

Mourinho also commented on his decision to throw the medal saying he does not keep losers’ medals.

“I don’t want the medal. I don’t keep them when I win, you can imagine what I would do when we I lose?”

“I think the medal will serve as a good memory for the Arsenal kid – his team wins and he takes the medal from the losers.”

The Chelsea Manager further said he is unsure if star striker Diego Costa will be fit for next Saturday’s league opener against Swansea, after the Spanish international missed the Wembley clash due to hamstring injury.
