Billy off Shujaa’s Hong Kong duty, Mayar set to debut

Resolution Impala Saracens back Derrick Mayar is set to make his debut for the national rugby sevens team at the Hong Kong Sevens slated for April 7-9 after making the list for Head Coach Innocent Simiyu’s squad on Friday.

The Shujaa’s influential player Billy Odhiambo was the notable ommission from Simyu’s 12-man squad that saw Oscar Ayodi and Leonard Mugaisi also ruled out of the seventh round of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

Odhiambo is out with a knock picked in Las Vegas tournament, Ayodi is yet to recuperate from a recurring knee injury while Mugaisi was dropped for ‘tactical’ reasons.

The squad that will also do duty in Singapore saw the return of Brian Tanga and Dennis Ombachi to the set-up.

Tanga last featured for the Shujaa at the Sydney Sevens, the fourth leg of the World Rugby Series and along with Ombachi now fill the slots left by the injured duo.

The Kenyans have been grouped alongside series leaders South Africa, Canada and France in Pool B of the Hong Kong Sevens.
