Bitok welcomes CAVB postponement of Club Championships

Malkia Strikers head coach Paul Bitok has welcomed the move by the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) to postpone all the volleyball activities in the continent over the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement released on Sunday, CAVB postponed all the upcoming competitions in the continent including the Africa Club Championships that were due for next month in Cairo, Egypt.

The women’s tournament was slated for April 2-11 with three Kenyan clubs; KCB, Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons – set for the event which has now been thrown in the back-burner.

In the men’s tournament that was primed for April 14-22, premier league champions GSU and KPA were set to represent the country.

According to Bitok who also doubles as KCB’s technical advisor, the move to cancel the annual tournament is timely.

“I want to thank CAVB for taking the decision to postpone the championships. It was our request for the competition to be suspended because we also wanted our teams to participate and there was now way we were going to take part after the government banned all the foreign trips,” said Bitok.

With the fate of the Olympic Games yet to be known, Bitok revealed that the current situation is adversely affecting the momentum his team had gained in readiness for the summer Games to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

At the same time, the former Rwanda head coach has devised a plan to make his squad active even at this period.

“Currently we are at a difficult situation where everything is basically at standstill. I am very concerned now that we are not training especially with ladies, they tend to increase in weight very quickly. To that effect I have sent each and every player programme to help keep them in shape remember we are still preparing for the Olympics,” he said.
