Blackberry rang a hat-trick; can Tusker sip their way to the title?

Tusker grabbed the headlines in the 16th round of Kenyan Premier League fixtures by humiliating cash-strapped Chemelil Sugar 7-0 at Muhoroni grounds but that’s not all; the 11-time KPL champions sent a strong statement to their rivals.

In running riot against Chemelil, the result took  the Robert Matano-led side to 31 points from just 15 league assignments;  a point less than league leaders Gor Mahia who squeezed a slender 1-0 win past moneybags Wazito to maintain their top spot. Charles Momanyi was on the scoresheet for K’Ogalo.

Tusker are serious title challengers this season and Gor should be aware of the threat they pose.

Poignantly, it was former Gor Mahia man George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo who led the Brewers in licking Chemelil Sugar to their feel; scoring a hat trick against the sorry side.

Arguably, at the moment, there’s no better side who have a tactician who knows the KPL much better than Matano and this can be an added advantage to the brewers as the race for the title picks momentum in the second leg.

There was another hat-trick though; John Makwatta scored three as Leopards mauled poor Zoo Kericho 4-1 in Kakamega.

In their most difficult moment as the club struggles financially, and with the news of Whyvonne Isuza ditching the club for moneybags Wazito FC, Makwatta stole the show with his well taken hat- trick that gave hope to Leopards’ quest for a first title since 1998.

“The boys were phenomenal; their spirit was something that really motivated me. It’s a good start to the New Year and despite the challenges we hope we’ll keep on with these performances,” Leopards’ assistant head coach Anthony Kimani told reporters after the match

Elsewhere, last season’s runners up Bandari FC have ruled out the possibility of signing any player in the January transfer window with head coach Bernard Mwalala saying players are ‘very expensive’.

The Coastal based side have been struggling and Mwalala hoped to strengthen to finish the season on a high.

The Dockers are already trailing league leaders Gor by 14 points despite getting a walkover after Nzoia Sugar failed to show up at Mbaraki Sports Club on Saturday.

“Mwita has closed our transfer window. Players are very expensive right now. We don’t need players to develop, we need someone who can come straight to the team and give us something different,” Mwalala told reporters at Mbaraki Sports Club.
