Blak Blad stun Impala, Top Fry for Driftwood 7s cup quarters

National Sevens Series leaders, Resolution Impala Saracens, slumped to a surprise 14-10 defeat at the hands of Blak Blad RFC, as the first day of the Driftwood 7s got underway at Mombasa Sports Club.

Fresh from winning the Kabeberi 7s last week, the Sarries took an early lead from Lameck Dunde whose pace proved tough to handle for the Blad defenders as he crossed the white wash to make it 5-0.

He would later be in the thick of things as a loose ball from Blad fell at his feet to set up team mate George Okowa to make it 10-0. It would not take their opponents long to get back into the game, as Andrew Gathua converted his own try to make it 10-7.

The game would heat up after the break, as poor communication from Sarries backline proved costly, when Franz Obudo charged through the flank for Blads’ second try that Gathua converted to end the match 14-10.

They then romped to the quarter finals with a match to spare when they humbled Pool A big guns Top Fry Nakuru 14-7 in the second major upset of the day.

Moses Begi and Franz Obudo’s converted tries sent the winners into an early lead as Nakuru made an immediate response to pull one back through Kelvin Kioko to make it 14-7 before the break.

Nakuru were frantic in the second half, desperately chasing the game as Blad remained calm and assured on defence, sailing through to their first Main Cup quarterfinal of the season.

Champions Mwamba RFC sailed through to the last eight with a 22-5 win over University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine before beating Menengai Oilers 14-0 with action closing on Sunday.
