Blow as broke handball team locked out of All Africa Games

The national handball team will not participate in this year’s All Africa Games in Morocco scheduled for August after they were disqualified from taking part in their final qualification match against Uganda due to lack of participation fee.

According to Kenya Handball Federation secretary Hassan Omondi, the team failed to pay 9,000 Euros (approximately Ksh 1.02 milion) hence the disqualification.

“Yes, we were disqualified because we couldn’t pay the money, which was supposed to come from the Ministry. It did not come on time,”he said.

“This means we will not be part of All Africa Games this time due that hitch but not because we didn’t have a good team to qualify,”Omondi lamented.

The development is a set back to the team, and head coach Jack Herbert  who said his charges were confident of nailing a slot to the competition.

“We came here(Kampala) prepared to qualify for Morocco but it’s unfortunate this  has happened,” said a dejected Hebert.

Kenya was scheduled to play Uganda in the final qualification match yesterday in Kampala where a win was enough to take them to Morocco.

The team which had travelled for the tie is expected back today.
