Blow to Police as KDF are named “the official” boxing league champs

Kenya Defence Forces are the champions of the 2017 national boxing league.

The soldiers claimed the honours on 122 points followed by Police 120.

BAK’s president John Kameta said on Monday that after an executive committee meeting in Mombasa over the weekend, they reversed the flyweight bout between Dennis Muthama and Morris Ochieng in favour of the former.

Muthama had initially “lost” to Ochieng in Mombasa, but with the committee’s ruling, the soldiers are now champions.

“In Kongowea, Mombasa, during the 5th round, Police were leading KDF  by  one point and they lost it due to poor officiating, while in the final round in Nairobi, KDF had 20 points and police scored 18,”Kameta said, adding that “We also added points earned at Kaloleni during the trials cum the last leg of the league.”

He went on: “We’re  waiting for more evidence from Aiba before they move swiftly on officials who tampered with the computer.

In a separate development, all the winners in the national trials have been named in Kenya’s team for an international tournament in India from January 28-February 1.

The team will be handled by coaches Patrick Maina, David Munuhe, Sammy Magima, Paul Mathenge and William Okumu, who is also the coach of Kongowea Boxing Club.

The women contingent heading to India are Veronica Mbithe, Christine Ongare, Lorna Kusa and Elizabeth Andiego.
