Boost for Gor as Walusimbi gets the nod to feature against Algers

Ugandan born Gor Mahia defender Godfrey Walusimbi has been declared fit and is set to feature tonight as Gor Mahia locks horns with Algerian powerhouse USM Algers at the Kasarani Stadium in a Caf-Confederation Cup Group ‘D’ match.

Until last evening, Walusimbi’s fitness for the match was a matter of doubt following a knock he picked recently. Team manager Jolawi Obondo told Citizen Digital said the boys are in high spirits and are targeting early goals.

With Walusimbi in the fray, coach Dylan Kerr defensive headache is now in the backburner and will instead shift focus to the defensive midfield and attack departments.

Key man Meddie Kagere will follow the game from the terraces owing to suspension, but his compatriot Jacques Tuyisenge and Ephrem Guikan should be equal to the task.

In the defensive midfield, Kerr will have to find a strong partnership that will insulate his defence from the pressure.

At the same time the team had a light-training session Wednesday at the match venue ahead of the floodlit match that kicks off at 7pm.

‘’Other than the Walusimbi fitness worry which is now a bygone, the rest of the team is fully fit for the match and we shall tighten our defence to ensure the visitors don’t see the back of the net,’’ Abondo, a long serving team manager, said.

Gor are in the group stages for the first time since 1987 when they reached the final of the Nelson Mandela Cup and bagged the crown.

K’Ogalo will be seeking their first win in their second group stage match after settling for a one all draw with Rwandese outfit Rayon Sports in their first match which was played away at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo in Kigali, Rwanda.

Gor were relegated to the second-tier competition after a 1-0 aggregate loss to Tunisian champions Esperance in the preliminaries of the Caf-Champions League.

Meanwhile, in another Group ‘D’ clash, Yanga SC will be hosting Rwanda’s Rayon Sports at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Yanga is trailing Group ‘D’ after going down 4-0 to Algers in the first round of group matches in Algiers
