Broke FKF Women’s league set to resume

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women Premier League will resume over the weekend, marking an end to its one-month break over lack of funds.

Last month, the WPL clubs reached a decision to pause the league following a biting cash crunch that had driven virtually all their activities including travel to a halt.

The FKF vice-chair Doris Petra told Citizen Digital on Wednesday that it expects a second batch of funds disbursement from FIFA by Friday, which subsequently will be channelled to WPL clubs.

FKF had distributed KSh375,000 to each of the 16 WPL clubs who will now be paid the rest of the 750,000 to which they are eligible to receive per season as part the FIFA kitty for the development of women football.

“We wrote to FIFA and they were to issue the grants last week but hopefully we are waiting for it by this Friday.

“We as FKF didn’t stop the league but it was decision made by the participating teams. Many teams had no funds that why the decision was made,” Petra said.

When the league went to recess, Thika Queens were joint top of the standings on 39 points, level with champions Vihiga Queens.

A total of 10 matches have been lined up for this weekend.
