Bukhungu Stadium collapse county probe team attacked

A probe team from the County Government of Kakamega that had gone to inspect Bukhungu Stadium after part of the facility that is under renovation collapsed on Saturday ran into trouble after being attacked on Monday.

The team halted the construction process for the stadium estimated to cost the County Ksh1b following the near-tragedy that saw a worker at the site injured and taken to hospital with most of his colleagues escaping narrowly since they had taken a break for lunch.

The committee comprising Member of County Assembly (MCA)s from Kakamega led by Joel Otuoma did rounds to inspect the damaged structure.

But just as soon as the team was completing its investigations, the area MCA Cleophas Malala alongside his counterpart Alex Khamasi who have been vocal against the project stormed the premises with a group of youth.

Speaking after viewing the damaged stadium, Malala and Khamasi questioned how the money set aside for the project from taxpayers was being spent after blaming the collapse of the Russia section on shoddy construction material.

The two leaders claimed the money should have been put to better use with the collapse piling pressure on Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who is yet to comment the incident that threatens to mar his flagship project.

Malala and Khamasi accused the County Government of exaggerating costs when doing projects.

“We will go to court and bar the construction of the structure completely and an independent auditor should be hired to shed light on how funds have been spent on the construction process,” Malala charged.

Bukhungu has remained closed since the day of the collapse with its fences blocked by iron sheet.
