Bullish Abunda living his dream, targets 2020 Athletics Int’l Meet ticket

National hammer throwing record holder Dominic Abunda is confident of sailing through to this year’s World Athletics Intercontinental Meet slated for Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani next month.

Abunda who was made to wait to realize his dream of representing Kenya in the Olympic Games after the postponement of the games following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic is happy to compete again this year after a long time training indoors.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, a bullish Abunda said he is confident of making an impression in the inaugural edition of the games as he aims to learn from the best.

“It will be a good challenge for me because I will come up against tough opponents from other countries but I’m sure I will play well.

“Many of them have excelled previously thus will help me learn more ideas on how I can improve my game by competing against them,” he explained.

One of the biggest hurdles he will have to overcome is the fact that he has stayed away from the hammer for so long since many of the training facilities he was using have been closed since March this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, he says he will blow off the cobwebs when participates in the pre-tournament trials that will take place on the 12th of September as he gets ready for the event.

“We have trials next month and I’m sure I will sail through to the Intercontinental Meet. I know I have been away from training facilities for so long but I’m fit and I will look to overcome that challenge in the trials,” he said.

He has urged Athletics Kenya to expedite their approval to use the MISC Kasarani training facilities as they aim to impress in the inaugural 2020 World Athletics Intercontinental Meet.
