The stage is set for the national Kenya Secondary School Games that kickoff  on Tuesday at the Kangaru School in Embu County.

Teams from all over the country will battle for glory in basketball, hockey, handball, rugby 15s and athletics, seeking to seal a ticket to the East African Games set for August.

Among the schools making debut at the national stage is Miathene Boys from Eastern Region, in rugby category.

Despite their inexperience, head coach Patrick Mwika says that his team is not worried of regular powerhouses in the competition.

“We believe in ourselves and we are well prepared for the games. For us it’s all about our target which is to win all our games and fly the Kenyan flag in the East Africa games come August,” he charged.

Miathene is in a tough pool A alongside defending champions Kakamega Boys, St. Antony Yala and Alliance.

“I’ve told my boys those are just names, we defeated the Eastern region defending champions Kangaru who have also played in the East Africa games, thus the game plan will be the same – to conquer our opponents who are regulars,” a bullish Mwika told.

The coach noted his squad is in high spirit and injury free, therefore ready for the gruelling campaign.

While some of the opponents have expressed fear over weather conditions in Embu due to the ongoing rains, Mwika is unperturbed.

“We have played in similar conditions from the county level and playing the nationals in the same grounds we played in the regional’s is an advantage to us. A good team should be able to adjust accordingly though, to the prevailing conditions,” concluded the tactician.

In pool B, the home team Kangaru School is drawn against Upperhill School, Galana and Menengai High.
