Bullish Mulinge reiterates stance not to beef up KPA squad

Kenya Ports Authority men’s volleyball team head coach Sammy Mulinge says the club will not sign new players ahead of the new season.

KPA have emerged as a regular contenders for the league title in recent times, qualifying for the play-offs four times in a row since their maiden appearance in 2016, but Mulinge sees no reason to bolster the squad even with the intense competition expected in the new season.

“We will not be making any signing ahead of the new season, we have chosen to maintain the squad we had last season because we believe they were a good team that can help us win a title next season which we are determined to do,” said Mulinge.

KPA has emerged as a regular contender for the league title in recent times, qualifying for the play-offs four times in a row since their maiden appearance in 2016.

“We are yet to resume training because we are waiting on the government’s directive in the next one or two weeks, but we have given the players the right training programs to maintain proper fitness to avoid struggling with form when the new season kicks off ,”added Mulinge.

The Dockers, who finished second behind General Service Unit (GSU) last year, missed out on the opportunity to play in the Africa Club Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the postponement of the continental tourney and Mulinge is confident they will dethrone the champions GSU next term.

“They are our main rivals and they have dominated the league for some time because they are a very strong team who have stayed together for so long,” he said. “For us to dethrone them we have to be consistent with the squad, work extra hard and play every game as a final, there is no shortcut,” the veteran tactician told Citizen Digital.
