Bungoma to roll out County leagues

The County Government of Bungoma has announced the completion in setting up of county leagues for various sporting disciplines in a bid to tap into youths’ talents from the region.

According to the County’s Sports Minister Beryl Mutekhele, the region boasts immense talent that needs to be nurtured from the grassroots.

“We have realized that our youth lack the necessary exposure needed to develop their talents. Therefore, we have decided to stage a county league where we expect all of our 45 wards to be represented. These wards will then merge to form a constituency and eventually each will contribute in the formation of a county team,” said Mutekhele.

The county has active volleyball teams for both men and women and has dominated national netball high school championships having won the title several times.

The region is also the home of hockey powerhouse Friends School Kamusinga and have produced national footballers including the likes of Tusker FC’s James Situma.

“Our aim is to look for raw talent from those villages and help the people of Bungoma use their abilities to earn a living. Victor Wanyama is making a fortune out of his football and want out youth to emulate such,” she added.

This year’s county league is scheduled to begin in April and end in December.
