Buoyed by Madoya and Kipkiruis rise, Zoo coach upbeat of better tidings
Zoo FC head coach Sammy Okoth is optimistic that the crowning of Michael Madoya as the 2017 Kenya Premier League Most Valuable Player is a sign of greater things to come for the Kericho-based side.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Okoth who led the Kericho-based club to a 12th place finish in their début in the top flight league is positive that Madoya’s heroics will go a long way in boosting the morale of his players in the coming season that is set to kick off in a fortnight.
“I believe that Madoya’s win is a motivation to the other young players and the team in general. On a personal level as well I think it is a great achievement considering it is not us who selected him.”
Interestingly, the diminutive mid-fielder who scooped four awards in the 2017 Kenya Premier League awards – a first in the local scene – will be keen to post even better displays as expectations on him rise by the day. His feat however raised eyebrows with pundits and football writers poking holes in the criteria used to select him as the league’s best.
Apart from Madoya, Nicholas Kipkurui was also a focal point having been crowned the Young Footballer of the Year by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya, and the duo will be expected to engineer Zoo’s rise in the new campaign.
The Kericho based side has been polishing their grey areas ahead of the start of the new season though Okoth is adamant that he won’t be bringing in new faces to the squad.
Okoth’s decision not to bring in new players is seen as a vote of confidence in his team but as to whether it remains the best call remains to be seen.
