CAF confirms new date for Belouzidad, Gor tie

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday evening granted Gor Mahia’s desperate request to postpone their Champions League clash against Algeria’s CR Belouzidad to Saturday.

The match was initially set for Wednesday evening, but the Kenyan champions sought more time from CAF having struggled to fly to the North African country whose airspace is locked for all non-cargo carriers, as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Only special entries authorised by the Government are allowed, and Gor through Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have been issued a permit through Doha, Qatar.

CAF’s letter seen by Citizen Digital reads, “to the concerned parties with the above-mentioned CL match, following the collective efforts of both Football Associations of Algeria and Kenya as well as both clubs participating in this match, kindly note that Gor Mahia FC will be travelling to Algiers on 25 Dec 2020.

“Accordingly, kindly note that the above-mentioned match will be rescheduled to be played on the 26th of December 2020 at 20:45 local time (Algerian time) in 5 July 1962 Stadium. Gor Mahia FC are requested to send their confirmed arrival details in Algiers.”

This is a reprieve to Gor who besides the travel restrictions to Algeria, are yet to convince players to honour the continental duty having boycotted training for the last three days.

The players are demanding for the two-month salary arrears before they can travel to Algeria.
