CAF to decide Kenya fate after studying chaos reports

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will rule on whether to sanction Kenya after studying reports from the referee and match commissioner into the disrupted Sunday’s AFCON qualifier against Guinea Bissau.

Zimbabwe referee, Norman Matemela, stopped the game for over half an hour when fans went on rampage shortly after the visitors scored the winner in the 81st minute of an eventual 1-0 defeat forcing police to fire tear gas to dispel the rioting mob.

CAF announced Monday the Disciplinary Board and Organising Committee for AFCON will meet thereafter for implementation of sanctions if need be.

“Any decision or sanction will be made following the official reports of the Referee & Match Comm

“After, Disciplinary Board & Organising Committee for AFCON will meet for the implementations of sanctions if need be. No further comment,” the continental governing body posted on micro-blogging site, Twitter.

Irate fans pelted the pitch with projectiles moments after the visitors took the lead through Mendes Suarez at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium spurred by the spirited protests against awarding the goal from Stars captain, Victor Wanyama and keeper Arnold Origi who was booked for disputing the ball had crossed the line.

Television replays suggested the ball had clearly crossed the line before Origi punched it back into play.

Ugly scenes ensued as police engaged the rampaging supporters in running battles in the stands with some lighting fires as they turned their wrath on Stars head coach, Stanley Okumbi and the officials.

The game re-started when order was restored and Stars could not find an equaliser or late turnaround victory that ended their interest in the 2017 Gabon AFCON finals.

Sanctions range from hefty fines, playing home matches in empty stadium, being ordered to field in a neutral venue or a ban from the tournament altogether.
