Cairo to host biggest African volleyball championship

The 2018 Women’s African Club Championship is poised to post a record number of participating teams, according to the latest figures published by the event organizers.

African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) said 21 teams have already confirmed their participation, three more than the previous record witnessed in 2008 in Cairo where Kenya Prisons emerged winners and last year in Tunisia.

This year’s edition returns to the Egyptian capital in March 6-15 and those numbers could yet grow bigger as interested teams still have four days before the submissions deadline elapses.

Egyptian giants and record continental winners Al Ahly as well as seven-time winners Kenya Pipeline are among the teams which have confirmed their participation at the annual competition now in its 29th edition.

Other teams raring to go are the defending champions Carthage of Tunisia, their compatriots Marsa, five-time champions Kenya Prisons 2017 silver medalists Shams Club from Egypt, Alexandria Sporting Egypt, DGSP (CGO), Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast,Vision VB,Nkumba University of Uganda, BDF of Botswana, AS Douanes of Burundi ,Canon de Ndjii and VB Club of (COD),Injis, Bafia and Nyong et Kelle.

Egypt will also host the corresponding men’s championship which will serve off in March 25 and conclude in April 6.

Kenya will be represented at the two international assignments by 2017 Kenya Women league champions Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons for the women’s edition while General Service Unit GSU and 2011 finalists Kenya Prisons  will fly Kenya’s flag in the men’s finals.

Meanwhile, the CAVB is set to hold the International and Candidate Referees Seminar from 23rd to 26th of March a head of the Men’s African Club championship for the framework of the implementation of the governing body’s strategic plan.
