Chafua Chafua punch hard to reign supreme in NBL Mombasa leg

Kenya Police popularly known as team ‘Chafua Chafua’ won in nine bouts bouts to claim the third leg of National Boxing League as the curtains came down on the three- day championship held s at Uwanja wa Mbuzi in Mombasa county.

The National Boxing League finals played on Sunday attracted an enormous spectatorship from Mombasa boxing enthusiast as well as those from other regions across the country.

The league wrapped up with 18 bouts in different categories. Stephen Otieno of Mombasa lost on points to Musa So of Kentrack in the bantamweight category,  in a special contest bout to curtain raise the finals.

Shaffi Bakari of Kenya Police received a walk over in flyweight category  after George Khaindi of Mombasa was declared medically unfit by the doctors.

Other boxers who won on walkover basis were Christine Ongare of Police  in the light flyweight and Elizabeth Akinyi  also from Police on the heavyweight class.

The other bouts saw Police and KDF trade counter punches  but in the long run, Police emerged the better side winning nine bouts in total bas KDF took  four .

Humphrey Ochieng alias ‘Jakababa’ of team ‘Chafua Chafua’ met his match in KDF man Hezron Maganga. Both exchanged a number of parries before Maganga delivered a successful jab to win on points.

It was also a routine victory from Elly Ajowi as he overpowered George Wanjuli from Busia in the heavyweight category while super heavyweight champion Fredrick Ramogi did not box due to medical reasons.

Speaking after the event, BAK official Anthony Ombok was full of praise for the over 100 boxers who turned up for the event as well as the fans who showed up in support of their respective boxers.

The event culminated with the naming of All Africa Games provisional squad that will be used to chose the national team that will travel to Rabat, Morocco next month.
