Champions Telkom crush Vikings in KHU

Telkom Kenya extended their 100 percent winning record in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier League with another ruthless performance as they crushed Vikings Club 7-0 at City Park on Saturday.

Ann Juma and Barbara Simiyu each notched braces in the crushing victory that saw them open a nine-point lead at the summit of the KHU women’s league while also relegating Vikings.

The defending champions took an offensive approach right from the start, camping at the front of the Vikings goal with almost every attack leading to a goal or a penalty corner.

Three of the seven goals were scored from the penalty corners with Jackline Mwangi, Terry Juma and Audrey Omaido also registering their names on the scoresheet.

Tom Olal, Telkom’s head coach, said he is confident that his side will retain the title unbeaten and proceed to the African club championship.

“We have only one league match left against Strathmore and we are not going to lose. We are winning this unbeaten.

“I am looking forward to the club’s championship and right now we are training for the championship, we need to work on our attacking force because we are wasting a lot of chances. I believe if we took all our chances seriously, we could have won by a bigger margin,” determined Olal told Citizen Digital.

Following the win, Telkom maintained their hold of top spot with 33 points from 11 games in which they have scored a staggering 61 times while only conceding only thrice.

A visibly disappointed Vikings head coach, Clyde Mbaha, blamed the loss of key players to rival teams for their dismal campaign as he admitted they have had their ‘worst season’.

“We lost valuable players in the beginning of the season. Some were poached while some got employed by big companies and since they were university graduates, they had to leave. It’s very unfortunate!” Mbaha claimed.

Vikings have lost 10 of their 11 games, drawn one and they have conceded the most goals so far, 52, scoring only two in the entire campaign.

Meanwhile, the men’s super league also went down where Impala club downed Kenyatta University 3-2 in an entertaining match played at City Park.

Adan Salat bagged a brace for Impala while Levis Omondi fired in a late winner with only two minutes to the final whistle.

Solomon Mhandi and Dennis Mwangi were on target for the students.
