Champs St. Peters open Pearly Gates for Chavakali

Champions St. Peter’s Mumias turned on the heat to sink hosts Chavakali Boys 22-12 in the Nzoia Region rugby sevens final to hold on to their crown and announce their entry to the nationals in style.

Captain Tom Maina led the assault with two tries with Osieko Said and Anami Bethuel grounding the ball once apiece for the winners as Vincent Majale and Adams Maranga crossed the whitewash for Chavakali.

The losing finalists also joined St. Peter’s in the national showpiece as Nzoia’s flag-bearers.

“We are going to fight to bring our Cup back. In fact we are already preparing for the East African games,” the bullish Maina asserted.

On his part, Chavakali skipper; Brian Shikuri, also exuded confidence that his team will perform well at the national stage.

“We were a bit fatigued and have suffered a few injuries but we will prepare adequately for the nationals,” the captain explained.

Chavakali had earlier beaten ‘The Scorpions’ of Kakamega High School in the quarter finals and survived an appeal by the latter who claimed that they had fielded up to three ineligible players.

The appeal was dismissed and the home team then overcome St. Joseph from Trans Nzoia 10-7 in the last four.

St. Peter’s qualified for the finals via a 17-5 defeat of Vihiga Boys in the semi-finals.

In Handball, it will be a Kakamega County verses Bungoma in the Friday finals after both Mukumu Boys and Girls from the former as well as Kimilili Boys and Moi Girls Kamusinga from the latter made the decider.

It will be the same case in netball, after Mukuyu Girls (Kakamega) beat Kilingili (Vihiga) 48-27 in the first semi, while Kikai Girls (Bungoma) swept aside International Village School (Vihiga) 52-22.

The Games conclude Friday, with football semi-finals and finals, and finals in handball and netball. Final Results for athletics will also be announced.
