Chaos as Simba rally to hold Yanga in epic Dar derby

Simba SC versus Young Africans lived up to its billing as Tanzania’s biggest derby as the two sides battled to a 1-1 draw in a closely contested Tanzanian Premier League match played at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam on Saturday, 1.

Young Africans (locally known as Yanga) opened the scoring in the first half through Burundian forward, Amissi Joselyn Tambwe, before Shizza Kichuya leveled matters in the dying minutes of the match to salvage a crucial point for the Msimbazi Street Boys in a fierce clash that was marred by chaos.

A first half red card for Simba’s skipper, Jonas Mkude, meant the visitors endured a nightmare start after the midfielder was sent off for protesting a call by center referee, Martin Saanya. The decision enraged the travelling fans who broke into protest, vandalizing seats and hurling them into pitch but the violent scenes lasted only five minutes as security officials intervened, lobbing teargas canisters into their terraces.

Tambwe expertly finished off a long ball from defender, Mbuyu Twite, controlling the pass in front of Simba’s Novat Lufunga then turning and twisting before rifling in the opener past goalkeeper, Vincent Angaban to give the champions an early breakthrough.

Saanya was crowded by Simba players demanding that the goal be disallowed on grounds that Tambwe had handled the ball before scoring but were waved away, sparking wild reactions from their fans who interrupted the match albeit shortly.

The hosts struggled to contain a resolute Simba side in the second half and were made to pay dearly for failing to kill off the tie early, as Kichuya popped up with a top-notch equalizing goal in the 87th minute, curling in straight from a corner kick.
