Chapa Dimba squad for Spain trip set to be unveiled

The Chapa Dimba na Safaricom squad that will travel to Spain for a ten-day training camp later in the year will be unveiled on Sunday, May 5 at Ligi Ngodo Grounds in Nairobi.

The team that will consist of  36 players, split equally between both genders, has been selected from eight regions across the country with each producing four players; two girls and two boys.

Leading telco Safaricom who are the tournaments’ sponsors will cater for the team’s stay in Spain in collaboration with the Spanish top flight football league Laliga.

While in Spain the team will attend different football clinics sessions conducted by a group of Spanish coaches drawn from the Lilaga teams.

It forms part of an extensive plan to unearth the country’s next football icon. David Majack, who went through the program last year is currently signed with Kenyan Premier League (KPL) outfit Kakamega Homeboyz.

This year’s finals will be held in Meru at the Kinoru stadium in May with the top teams winning KSh1 million among other top prizes.

According to former Kenyan international Innocent Mutiso this year’s tournament has been a great success in identifying and growing young talents.

“These boys and girls are lucky, very lucky that they have something like this, they have people to teach them when they are still young during our time such things were never there,” he said.

“I challenge other organizations and even government to have this kind of an initiate that goes to grass roots and this way we help many young people.”
