Chapa Dimba youngster begs for chance to prove worth

Qualifying for the Eastern region Chapa Dimba na Safaricom finals gave much hope for St Daniels Chuka football team captain Brian Marwa until his side was knocked out in the semi-final by the eventual winners Black Panther.

It was the second time the 16-year-old had been selected to the National junior team following his call-up to the Inaugural Southampton Cup U14 Shield Tournament in 2017 when he was dropped at the final hurdle.

“In the 2017 Junior National team trials I was selected from the grass root level, in Kuria East sub County, I also passed the county trials in Migori and the regional level in Nyanza that is how I realized I have potential; A select team represented Nyanza in the nationals where we lost to Nairobi in the final, I was among the best midfielders and was selected for the last 32,” Marwa told Citizen Digital.

With FKF only needing 20 players for the tournament in Southampton, England, 12 players had to be dropped and Marwa failed to make the cut not because of his fault.

“I failed because I didn’t play, when we arrived the organizers said we had travelled for long from Nyanza and we needed to rest so the first day was scheduled for players from the Nairobi region;

“The second day I still didn’t make the team until I had to ask the coach, who decided to give me a chance in the dying minutes, in my thoughts I knew by the reaction of the fans my first touch and dribble had earned me a chance but that was not to be,” Marwa added

“ I Started playing in class five and was encouraged by many because of my talent, my problems are made worse because of the distance I have to travel for trials and many don’t believe there is talent that far,”

His talent has earned him a High school scholarship, and former Mathare United and Gor Mahia sensation Innocent Mutiso who met the young footballer at this year’s Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Eastern region finals believes will still give him a chance, despite his small body physique which he believes is denying him a chance to make a breakthrough in his football career.

“After mentorship program he approached me and I was touched because the same thing happened to me I tried different team and I was dropped towards the final selection but I never give up;

“You cannot appear for trials if you are not talented he has scholarship in St Daniels in Meru because of his talent he even made Harambee stars junior team selection, it is the same thing I went through but I still made it,” Mutiso said

Marwa’s second call up to the National Junior team still didn’t bore fruit this time due to lack of a sponsor.

“Some time last year we had a tournament and one of FKF scouts spotted me and gave me a second chance where a team was being selected for South Africa last year, but lack of someone to help me travel to join the team disrupted everything;

“I want to make a breakthrough in football because I know I can do something and help my family who are relying on me after the death of our father three years ago,” He concluded
