Chavakali, Tigoi retain Vihiga County basketball titles

Basketball titles at the Vihiga County Games remained with familiar faces as Chavakali Boys and Tigoi Girls successfully defended their crowns.

Chavakali defeated Nyang’ori Boys 69-59 in the boys’ final while Tigoi claimed a crushing 73-18 win over Kaimosi Girls as the four-day competition came to an end on Saturday.

Chavakali head coach Steve Otieno said his charges have the potential to play even better basketball as he shifted focus to the forthcoming regional competitions.

“We are happy to win today. The boys played well and have shown a lot of improvement. We expect to do well in the regional games and proceed to the nationals like we did last year,” Otieno told Citizen Digital.

Captain Tedd Harrison said there is little time to savour the victory as he revealed the team’s ambition is to go all the way to the East African championships.

“We have one week to go and sharpen up before we head to the regional games,” he said.

Chavakali dominated all the quarters winning the first quarter 19-15 with Tedd scoring 9 points.

In the second quarter, Trevor Opiyo of Nyang’ori scored 14 points but his solo performance could not prevent his side from losing 37-36.

Tedd led the scoring charts in the third quarter with 7 points as Chavakali won 17-14.

In the final quarter Dante Ngaira scored 6 points to help the champions win 14-09.Both teams will represent Vihiga in the regionals in Bungoma.

Kigama boys finished third after defeating Vihiga boys 34-33 in the third-place playoffs.

15s title stays at Chavakali

Chavakali Boys continued their rugby 15s dominance when they successfully defended their trophy in the just concluded Vihiga county secondary schools term one games after smashing out their long time rivals Vihiga Boys 17-0 in the final played at Nyang’ori Boys high school.

“It was our target to defend the trophy. We started poorly in our first group match when we were defeated by the same Vihiga, but we raised up to the occasion winning the remaining matches. We hope to do well in the regionals and qualify to the nationals,” he said.

Kevin Ochieng, Bramwel Makokha and Bede Enonda scored a try each while Isaac Ouma converted a try to give Chavakali 17 points.

The two teams had met in the group stages whereby Vihiga had defeated Chavakali 18-0 which was their first match.

Both teams will represent Vihiga county in the regionals that will take place at Kamusinga Boys High school in Bungoma county from 21st to 24th March 2018.

Vihiga take hockey honours

Vihiga Boys High school hockey team have proven to be hockey giants after successfully defending their trophy in the on going Vihiga county secondary schools term one games after edging out Nyang’ori Boys 2-0 in the final.

Stanley Omondi scored the opening goal in the 16th minute before Emanuel Munda scored a flick in the 28th minute to seal the win for Vihiga.

In the semis Vihiga had seen off Emusire boys 4-0 while Nyang’ori had defeated Mmbale Boys 3-2. Emusire went ahead to finish third in the playoffs defeating Mmbale Boys 2-1.

Both Vihiga and Nyang’ori will represent Vihiga in the regionals.
