Chemelil fightback has Kerr doubting Gor killer instinct

Dylan Kerr lamented Gor Mahia FC’s inability to once again kill off a game as the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Chemelil Sugar on Wednesday.

After taking a 2-0 lead into the break through Humphrey Mieno and Ephrem Guikan’s goals, Gor conceded twice in the 69th and 72nd minutes to allow Chemelil nick a point.

During that three-minute blitz Gor were a man down after goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch had been sent off but Kerr said he felt Gor should have made life harder for the hosts by bestowing on themselves a bigger cushion early on.

“At 2-0 in the first half it felt comfortable but we probably should have added a few more. I said to them at half time don’t go into the second half thinking you’ve won this game. Go out and play like it’s still 0-0.

“Obviously the sending off didn’t work for us; the referee I think he got it right. We switched off for the first goal and the second was another defensive error but credit to Chemelil for taking the advantage,” Kerr told Citizen Digital.

The Englishman however insisted he was happy with the way his side coped as they battled to preserve their unbeaten start to the season after Charles Okiya and Benedicto Mwamlanga strikes for Chemelil had them on the brink.

“They put us under pressure and it’s good we hang on; it keeps our unbeaten run going. We’ve got to kill off these games when we can and it’s frustrating that we’re making this mistake yet again,” he said.

The record KPL champions have a fixture against second-placed Mathare United on Sunday in what will serve as a testing warm-up ahead of their CAF Confederation group stage opener against Rayon Sports on May 6.
