Chepngetich shatters Dubai Marathon course record

Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich ended Ethiopia’s dominance at the Dubai Marathon in stunning fashion as she pulling off a record breaking performance on the streets of the emirate on Friday morning.

The 24-year-old timed 2:17:08 for her victory, shattering the course record held by Ethiopian Roza Dereje as she moved up into third on the all-time list behind American Paula Radcliffe and compatriot Mary Keitany.

She took more than two minutes off Dereje’s course record of 2:19:17 and became the first Kenyan woman since 2006 to win in Dubai.

The men’s competition produced another record race with Getaneh Tamire Molla of Ethiopia breaking the course record to emerge as the winner. He shattered the record set by his compatriot Mosinet Geremew las year with a time of 2:04:00.

Herpassa Negasa Kitesa of Ethiopia finished second in the men’s with a timing of 2:03:40 while his compatriot Asefa Mengstu Negewo finished third at 2:04:24. It was once again a clean sweep by the Ethiopian men.

In the women’s race, Worknesh Degefa Debele of Ethiopia finished second with a timing of 2:17: 41 while her compatriot Worknesh Degefa Gurmesa with a timing of 2:21:05 finished third.
