Cherono break record, leads Kenya’s clean sweep in Amsterdam Marathon

Laurence Cherono smashed the Amsterdam Marathon course record to claim top honours in 2:05.09 hrs leading compatriots to a clean podium sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Cherono shed off 12 seconds off the 2:05.21hrs course record set by last year’s champion and London Marathon title holder Daniel Wanjiru.

Nobert Kigen settled for the runners up slot in 2:05.13 ahead of country man Abraham Kiptum who clocked 2:05.26hrs.

However, Mule Wasihun of Ethiopia came fourth, spoiling the party for the Kenyan runners who would have replicated last year’s performance where they took the top eight positions in the race.

Mule clocked 2:05. 39hrs while Alban Korir followed about two minutes later to take fifth place in 2:07.01hrs. Stephen Chebogut finished sixth in 2:07.30hrs

In the women’s race, Gladys Chesir was the only Kenyan podium finisher behind Ethiopian Tadelech Bekele.

Bekele took the women’s title after stopping the timer at 2:21.54hrs while Chesir clocked 2:24.54 for second place. Azmera Abreha also of Ethiopia took third place in 2:25.54hrs.
