Charles Simotwo was the unlikely hero as he destroyed a strong field to win the men’s 1500m in 3:32.75 at the Kenyan Olympics trials at the Moi Stadium Kasarani on Saturday.

Iten-based Kamar Etyang was second as Abel Kipsang closed the podium, ahead of World 1500m champion Timothy Cheruiyot.

“I was confident as I entered today’s race. It was at the 100m mark that I realised I was still strong enough to go for the win and I thank God I made it,” said Simotwo.

Etyang who will be making her maiden appearance in Kenyan colours said he didn’t expect yo make the team.

“I dedicate this victory to my coach. I never expected something like this will happen. I come from a humble background in Turkana,” said Etyang
