Cheruiyot, Manangoi run the show in 1,500 metres

World 1,500m silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot led his training mate and World champion Elijah Manangoi to a top-two finish in the trials as the duo bagged the tickets to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, set for April in Gold Coast, Australia.

Cheruiyot clocked 3 minutes, 34.1 seconds,  ahead of Manangoi who finished in a time of 3.35.1, as Kumar Taki completed slot for Team Kenya coming in third in 3.35.5.

Manangoi’s younger brother George was not lucky enough as he missed the ticket by a whisker, finishing fourth in his maiden senior competition.

Cheruiyot who emerged Diamond League winner last season says he now targets gold in Australia.

“After winning silver in last year’s world championships, this time around I will be happy if I get gold, ” said Cheruiyot shortly after his hard-earned victory at Kasarani under the baking sun.

On his part,  Manangoi senior, said he hopes to lower his personal best and will be happy to appear on the podium once again.

“I will be contented with any medal, but most important, for me, this season, is to lower my personal best, ” Manangoi revealed.
