Chespol, Emase shine at Prisons Championships

World Under-20 3000m steeplechase champion Celliphine Chespol clinched her maiden victory in the women’s 5000m as the Kenya Prisons Service Athletics Championships kicked off today in Kasarani.

Chespol who ran a comfortable race from the start to finish clocked 15:50.7 ahead of Tabitha Wangare (16:32.7) and Nancy Nzisa (16:36.5) who finished second and third respectively.
The African silver medalist said she was using the race in preparation for the national championships to be held in a month’s time.
“I am happy to register my first win in 5k although I did not face stiff competition I was just using this event for my endurance ahead of trials because currently I am focused on making to the world’s,” she said.
Elsewhere, Peter Emase of Nairobi stormed to victory in the men’s 10000m beating the 2016 African 10000m silver medalist Wilfred Kimitei of North Eastern who finished second in 28:56.4 while Cornelius Kangogo also of North Eastern came in third in 28:58.3
The 29 year old Emase who is returning from a long term knee injury said he is now gunning for the nationals as he seeks to make it to the national team for the World Championship.
“I have not competed for close to a year now and I am happy to back. I know the national championships will not be easy but I am ready for the challenge,” said Emase who trains in Town.
World Under-20 1500m champion George Manangoi competing as a guest won the first 1500m semi final crossing the finish line in 3:50.1 with his training mate Vincent Keter clinching the second semi final in 3:52.4.
Olympic Games 800m bronze medalist Margaret Nyairera sailed through to the finals of 200m after finishing second in heat one clocking 24.6. She would later finish third in 800m heats.
World 1500m silver medalist Timothy Cheruiyot cruised to an easy victory in 800m semi finals as he remained on track to defending his title tomorrow.
The two-day championship will end tomorrow as Prisons select their team for national championships cum trials for World Championships due for August 20-22 at the Nyayo National stadium.
