Chicharito: Why I left Manchester United for Bayer Leverkusen

Former Manchester United forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has revealed the circumstances that led to his departure from Old Trafford.

In his interview with Spanish TV Fiebre Maldini, Hernandez confirmed reports that he had been forced out by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal despite his interest to stay at the club.

“Van Gaal told me I had only one per cent chance of playing for Manchester United giving me no option but to leave for Bayer Leverkusen who were ready to sign me,” Hernandez is quoted by Daily Mail as saying.

“I did not want to leave but I wanted more playing time and Van Gaal made it clear that this was going to be an impossible task. He told me he had already signed strikers whom I should battle with for a place in the team but that I should leave when an offer came forth.”

The Mexico international has been a revelation for Leverkusen since joining, scoring 13 goals in his 15 appearances for the German-side and 5 goals in 6 appearances for his national team.

Before he was sold in the summer, the 27-year-old had spent a season-long loan spell at Real Madrid following recommendations by Manchester United board.

On returning, however, Hernandez only played one league match for Manchester United after recovering from injury before he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen at the beginning of the season before the closure of the summer transfer window.

Hernandez joined United from Mexican club Guadalajara in 2010 where he spend five years winning two premier league titles and two FA Community Shield trophies.

He also won the FIFA Club World Cup while at Real Madrid.
