City Stadium to be renamed after Joe Kadenge Raila

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga says plans have been finalized to rename Nairobi’s City Stadium in honour of the late Joe Kadenge.

Speaking  at Charter Hall in Nairobi on Tuesday evening during a fundraiser to help offset funeral expenses of the late Kadenge, Raila said he made the request to President Uhuru Kenyatta who accepted and both have formally spoken to Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko to ensure this happens soon.

“Joe was a legend. And that is why I proposed to President Kenyatta on the possibility of renaming City Stadium in his honour,” said Raila. “We both have spoken with Sonko and has agreed to fast track the process,” he added.

Odinga added that the stadium will now be called Joe Kadenge Stadium and that there will be a series of events to honour Joe during the launch of the new name.

He also announced that following the order by President Kenyatta that Joe’s house in South B be given to him, Governor Sonko had agreed to ensure paper work is done to have it handed over to his family.

“It was Joe’s wish that the house in Mariakani estate be handed over to him and that wish was granted by the President,” he added.

During the fundraiser,  Odinga gave his contribution of Ksh 1 million and President Kenyatta’s contribution of a similar amount. Governor Sonko sent Ksh1 million while ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi contributed Ksh 150,000. COTU boss Francis Atwoli sent Ksh 200,000. Secretary General of the ODM Party Edwin Sifuna gave Ksh 50,000, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Ksh100,000, Nairobi Woman MP Esther Pasaris Ksh50,000 and Makadara MP George Alwadwa Ksh50,000.
