City Stars Bageya is Sportpesa Footballer of the Month

City Stars forward Jimmy Bageya is the SJAK/Sportpesa Footballer of the Month winner for October.

The diminutive Ugandan emerged victorious in the tightest ever poll carried out by sports’ journalists since the award scheme was inaugurated in March.

Bageya beat on form Gor Mahia striker Michael Olunga by a single vote in a run-off poll after the duo had tied on 16 points in the first round of voting.

Besides Bageya and Olunga, other nominees for the October gong, which comes with a 42-inch LG Television set and a Ksh 50,000 cheque, included enterprising Bandari forward David King’atua, combative Gor Mahia midfielder Khalid Aucho, AFC Leopards midfield gem Bernard Mang’oli and Ebrimah Sanneh of City Stars.

Mang’oli, Sanneh and Aucho then fell of the running after thorough scrutiny of their contributions in October leaving King’atua, Olunga and Bageya on the ballot.

Olunga and Bageya emerged joint top on 16 points with Kingatua garnering 10 points, hence the run-off poll which went Bageya’s way.

The City Stars’ man scored two crucial goals in the month of October which earned his side six points and a place in top flight division in 2016.

Bageya’s goals in league wins over Ushuru FC and fellow strugglers KCB made him the 8th recipient of the gong following Ali Abondo, John Makwata, Gabriel Andika, Karim Nzigiyimana, Jesse Were, George Mandela and Meddie Kagere who were awarded winners from March to September.

His contest with Olunga also proved to be the toughest in the awards as it was the first instance when a run-off vote was required to separate candidates.
