City Stars maintain dominance as NSL takes a forced break

Nairobi City Stars maintained their lead at the top of the National Super League log with a narrow 1-0 win over fifth-placed Nairobi Stima on Saturday at the Camp Toyoyo grounds.

The champions-elect left it late to score the winner with an Ebrima Sanneh strike with a minute to go enough to earn them all the three points.

This fete moved them closer to their promotion ambitions after they opened up a 10-point gap from second-placed Bidco United, who have 54 points.

The team has raked 64 points so far with 10 games to go.

Many of the weekend fixtures were however not honoured following the government’s directive to stop all sporting events in the country as it aims to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

However, club director Samson Otieno says this hiatus will hurt the prospects of many clubs given they will have to make do with a prolonged season

“The break will be very costly to many clubs. First of all, it will affect them financially as the players will continue earning their salaries without playing.

“We expected to conclude our season in May, but with a 30-day extension, we will have to make do with the reality of a prolonged season,” he told Citizen Digital.

He noted that this extension would affect preseason preparations for next term; the period will be reduced to a month should the hiatus extend to June.

“Next season we will be playing in the Kenya Premier League. With this in mind, our season will be interrupted as we will not have a proper preseason,” he lamented.

He however, maintained his team is confident they will seal promotion when he league resumes.

“I am happy that we have put ourselves in good stead since the big gap between the second-placed teams and us means it will be difficult for them to catch us when the league resumes.”
