Coach Aussems hails Leopards spirit

AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems has lauded his players for putting on a ‘heart of a title contender’ following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Nairobi City Stars.

Aussems said his side showed great spirit to snatch the vital victory despite playing virtually the entire second half with a man down following the sending off of captain Robinson Kamura at Kasarani Annex.

“You know we never give up and that is very important. Even with 10 men we always knew we would get an opportunity and I’m happy we took it when it came. Mukangula (Eugene) could have scored in the first half after getting the biggest opportunity but that was never the case,” Aussems said.

The Belgian said that the win was a deserving one and that now his players have mastered his philosophy.

“When I came in I had to know the players and know their potential and that is why I have changed some playing positions for some players like Marvin (Nabwire) who is now doing very very well in midfield.

“I am very happy for them because we are implementing what we do in training with every player working very hard,” Aussems added.

The former Simba SC tactician has also praised the new Covid-19 rule which allows five substitutions something that worked to his favour.

“That’s thanks to the pandemic because we can do five changes. I summoned Hansel (Ochieng) knowing that he could add some freshness.

I told him that you’ll have one opportunity but I did’nt accept that he would score a goal”, Aussems underscored.

The winning catapulted Leopards to 28 points, seven off leaders Tusker who have played two more matches.

Leopards next play Vihiga United away in Mumias while City Stars will host leaders Tusker in Nairobi.
