Coach Kassim lauds Gusii after thrilling fightback

National Super League side Gusii FC head coach Kassim Junior Otieno has lauded his charges for showing resilience in their 3-3 draw against local rivals Shabana in a tense derby played at the Narok Stadium on Tuesday.

Shabana looked set to collect all three points when Fred Nyakundi “Malouda” rifled home a belter with ten minutes to go to give his side a narrow 3-2 lead before a late defensive blunder allowed Daniel Murage to slot home the equalizer.

Kassim whose side was on a two-game winless streak lauded their resilience, terming their encounter with Shabana as a proper derby.

“Am happy with the way we have played today and being a derby, I can take a point any day.

“We come from the same region and the players know each other very well. Today’s result is good for our morale and I expect my players to keep improving in our next match against Mt. Kenya in Nairobi over the weekend.”

For Shabana, it was a missed opportunity to move into the qualifying places on the log with victory enough to see them leapfrog Kibera Black Stars and go third.

However, the outcome will boost their confidence ahead of their weekend crunch tie against league leaders Football Club Talanta.

Head coach Robert Ojienda remained unfazed by the latest setback in their promotion quest, noting that the derby status of their encounter means they can take only positives from the result.

“Games like this one are won mentally and you can see from the way goals were scored.

“These players have played together for so long and geographically they come from the same region.

“Am proud of the way we have played and I expect us to go one better against Talanta in our next game.”
