Coach Mbulo hails determined Telkom

Telkom coach Rose Mbulo has credited fitness and determination for her team’s consistency after they edged USIU 2-1 to remain top of the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Premier League standings.

Fresh from winning the Mombasa five Aside tournament, Telkom shook off the fatigue see off USIU thanks to goals Eliana Chebet and Lilian Aura while Veronica Maua struck on the other end.

Speaking after the match at City Park, Mbulo said the team won due to their discipline and fitness gained from regular training as well as from participating in the Mombasa tourney.

“Our secret for winning is discipline and training very hard, we train a lot and this is our home ground where we train regularly,” Mbulo said.

On the importance of participating in the Mombasa tournament, she said it was good exposure for the girls as it gave them a training platform to be physically fit for the league as well as the coming club championship.

“The tournament was part of our fitness program because only five players play on the pitch,”

“Going forward, we want to lead until the end of the league and we will be using league matches as part of our training for the club championship,” said the coach

Consequently, USIU Coach Wilis Okeyo who was in Germany for training said he will be keen to replicate what he learned in Germany for the better of his girls.

“There is a very different ball game over there and I hope what I learned will be reflected to the girls as this is the message I will be giving them as we try to work on our attacking, We need to play high press and speed hockey,” said Okeyo

As they build up for their next game against Strathmore, Okeyo said the team in a fine status and promised to give their fans the best performance.

“We lost a flick but we will work on our fitness and we promise our fans better results in our next match” said Okeyo.

The win now leaves Telkom still top of the table with 11points after five games while USIU takes up the second place with seven points after four matches.
