Coach Njogu issues rallying cry for sinking Thika

Thika United coach John Njogu has warned his players to sharpen their focus before it is too late to save their Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season.

Thika are second from bottom of the KPL standings and head into Saturday’s clash with Kakamega Homeboyz on the back of a poor run of form that includes four losses in their last six fixtures.

Last season, Thika United needed a 2-1 aggregate win over Ushuru FC in a promotion play-off to secure their top flight status and are already beginning to clutch on KPL straws as relegation contenders.

As the season ticks down to the homestretch, Njogu has urged his players to rediscover their winning touch lest they run out of matches to place themselves in a comfortable position.

“We have an advantage because we did not play last weekend and I think the players have had enough rest. Also, our new players have prepared enough and we are confident that their injection into the squad will help get a good result.

“We replenished our striking force during the transfer by recruiting three experienced players who will reinforce our attacking prowess,” Njogu said.

The manager has his work cut out with the club currently in the drop zone, with an immediate objective being arresting further slump. However, he is optimistic that they will earn critical points as they bid to climb higher in the league pyramid.

“We have a chance of moving out of the drop zone since we are midway through the season. I believe that we can win a bigger part of the remaining thirteen matches,” he added.

Victory will see Thika move level with Chemelil Sugar who are 15th on the log with 21 points.

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards will battle Bandari United at Machakos Stadium in what is tipped to be the match of the weekend. The two teams are level on 35 points but Ingwe have a game in hand.
