Coach Oktay to rejig Gor squad for CAF duty

Gor Mahia FC head coach Hassan Oktay says he will field a ‘completely different’ squad for Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup clash against Cameroonian side New Star de Douala.

Gor rested their regulars on Wednesday as they overcame Posta Rangers 2-1 at the Kasarani Stadium and Oktay could recall his key men back to the starting line-up for the continental duty.

Pascal Ogweno and Charles Momanyi were paired at centre back and it looks certain to remain that way after CAF suspended starters Harun Shakava and Joash Onyango over indiscipline issues.

It presents a tricky situation for Oktay after Ogweno and Momanyi posted an underwhelming display against Posta, with the former particularly at fault for the goal they conceded.

Ogweno, the former Kariobangi Sharks defender, was hauled off before half time with Joachim Oluoch introduced in his place to fasten the rear nuts.

“I need to know my players, not in training but how they actually play in a game situation. Each one of them needs to be given a chance,’’ Oktay told Citizen Digital.

The Cyprus-born tactician also rested right back Philemon Otieno, midfielders Bernard Ondiek, Humphrey mieno, Ernest Wendo as well as strikers Nicholas Kipkirui and Jacques Tuyisenge.

Cercidy Okeyo, who started against Posta in midfield, grabbed the chance to impress with some sweet ball supply with Francis Kahata also doing exceptional work in a slightly advanced role.

Gor’s Cameroonian opponents are expected in the Country tomorrow Friday with the aggregate winner set to advance into the group stages of the second-tier continental show piece
