Collins Injera’s message to President Uhuru Kenyatta

Collins Injera’s message to President Uhuru Kenyatta

Social media trolls may actually get to see their wild joke turn into reality; well if President Uhuru Kenyatta takes Shujaa vice-captain Collins Injera’s entreaty seriously.

Speaking to World Sevens Rugby ambassador Karl Te Nana ahead of his naming as the eighth HSBC player of the final, a beaming Injera jokingly asked the Kenyan President to help ensure Shujaa get a Kenya Sevens public holiday in honor of their historic feat.

“Hopefully the President is watching and hopefully we get a public holiday – the Kenya Sevens public holiday,” he told Te Nana.

After shocking defending champions and Series leader leader Fiji 30-7 to win a first World Sevens Series final after 114 tournaments of searching, it does not sound like too much to ask.

The record-chasing star scored two tries in the final to close in on Argentina’s Santiago Gomez Cora (230 tries) at the top of the all-time try scoring chart to help Kenya become the first African team to win a World Sevens Series tournament outside Africa.

However, Injera was quick to downplay the magnitude of his own record that now stands at 225 – only six touchdowns shy of smashing the Argentine’s record – saying that winning the final as a team was much more important.

“It means a lot. Having to get one over Fiji with more than 30 points is such a special feeling. We’ve worked hard all weekend and have since day one. I guess coming into this final we had to believe,” he said.

#Kenya7s shot to the top of trending chats on micro blogging site Twitter within minutes of the final whistle as South African pay TV channel, SuperSport, that was broadcasting the final live came under fire for the break in transmission that robbed a watching nation a view of every scene of the historic moment when captain Andrew Amonde lifted the Singapore 7s Main Cup trophy.

While most elated Kenyan fans tweeted or posted congratulatory messages and pictures, another cheeky lot saw a chance to wax a hoax that the President had, from State House, declared Monday, 18 a public holiday.
