Comedy of errors cost Shujaa in Cape Town 7s
Kenya Sevens started their Cape Town Sevens campaign on a wrong foot after losing 21-14 to France in their group ‘A’ match in South Africa.
Shujaa were leading 14-0 at halftime, but soon after the break, France were able to respond through quick tries before the hooter from Baptiste Mazoue, Jean-Pascal Barraque and Stephen Parez to settle the tie in France’s favour.
Jean-Pascal Barraque converted for France and will have to overcome Russia or South Africa for a Cup quarterfinal.
Kenya drew the first blood after Samuel Oliech was put through by Brian Tanga to land a converted try between the posts.
Oliech would convert his try, and before half time, Brian Tanga turned from provider to scoring his try which Oliech easily converted.
A defensive lapse from the Shujaa diminished their chances of a Cup quarter-final appearance tomorrow after Jean Baptiste Mazoue scored after the break; making the scoreboard read 14-7.
Baptiste Barraque and Stephen Perez each scored a try after a series of defensive blunders by Kenya in their own 22 yards, as the French took a 21-14 lead.
The scores would remain the same after Kenya failed to sparkle in their attack and France held on for a deserved win.
The Innocent Simiyu side goes back to the drawing board and strategies on how they can win their two remaining games for a Cup quarterfinal berth.
Russia will be up next for Kenya, before they face hosts and African Champions, South Africa, in a match that promises to elicit fireworks in the city of Cape Town.
