Commandos up the stakes by flying to Nzoia school games

Favourites Kakamega High School football team famously known as Green Commandos made history on Monday when they flew in-yes flew in- to Lodwar for the Nzoia Region Kenya Secondary School Ball Games that kick-off Wednesday.

The Commandoes who are also registered to play in the FKF Nationwide Division 2 caused a stir in becoming the first school team to take to the skies for a regional tournament that will be held at Lodwar High School to save their prized players from the long and treacherous journey to the northern frontier town.

After losing at the County level last year, the former national champions chose to up the stakes by flying to the sandy town in what got tongues wagging to no end.

“Courtesy of the Kakamega High Old Boys, we booked a flight for the team to arrive early, and acclimatise well with the hot conditions,” head Coach Brendem Mwinamo asserted.

The Commandos, open their campaign against bitter rivals and champions St. Anthony from Kitale in a clash that will raise as much dust as their flight did when it landed before completing their Group A fixtures against Bukembe High and AGC Lokichar.

The Kakamega side will highly depend on Barcelona’s La Masia, bound striker Ronald Bebeto Sichenje, who played a big role to help his school qualify.

The youngster is expected to jet out of the country for Barcelona after the East and Central African Secondary School Ball Games slated for Eldoret, in August.

“I know the competition is hard but my son is well prepared for it, this is not his first competition.

“He is carrying the fame of his school on his shoulders and I’m sure he will not disappoint us because he has promised to do his best,” the tyros’ dad Zecharia Sichenje who also helps in training the Commandos maintained.

In Group B matches, hosts Lokitang launch their campaign against Butula from Busia County at the Lodwar Prisons ground, before battling it out with Kapenguria Boys from West Pokot County later on Wednesday evening in Nakwamekwi Primary School.

Ebwali from Vihiga County will play their opener against Kapenguria in Nakwamekwi before summing up their Wednesday matches against Butula at the Prisons ground.
