Commonwealth champ Kabuu to participate in Ndakaini Marathon
The 2006 10,000m Commonwealth champion Lucy Kabuu is expected to lead a stellar cast of athletes in the 14th edition of the UAP Old Mutual Ndakaini Half-Marathon that takes place on Saturday in Gatanga, Muranga County.
Apart from Kabuu, several Ethiopian and Uganda runners are expected to participate.
Ahead of the weekend action, preparations have intensified with organizers, the Ndakaini Dam Environment Conservation Association (NDEKA), expecting an increased number of participants.
The competition includes a 21km, 10km and 5km races. The family- fun- run is held every September around the Ndakaini dam, with the aim of conserving the water resource – the source of over 70 percent of Nairobi’s water supply.
And in a bid to improve motivation amongst participants , organizers have increased prize monies with winners in the 21km race poised to take home Sh 300,000 up from Sh 200,000 while the runners up will receive Sh 150,000 up from Kshs 100,000. Third place finishers will pocket Sh 105,000.
At the same time, NDEKA chairman Joseph Kimura has said that participants will have the privilege of using the newly furbished stadium at Ndakaini.
“The marathon has grown to an international standard, and we want to change the lives of the locals, and that why we came up with this idea to built a new stadium to nurture more talents in the area, and it can also be used for family outings and social events,” Kimura said.
The UAP Old Mutual Ndakaini Half Marathon is an all- inclusive event that brings together people from all walks of life. Patrick Kipngeno and Brigit Kosgei are the men and women defending champions. Royal Media Services are one of the sponsors of the event.
