Could a new stadium be in the horizon for Mombasa County?

A new international stadium could soon take shape in Mombasa as the county government moves to address the shortage of recreational facilities for the youth.

The move is also aimed at addressing the shortage of sporting activities, caused by lack of adequate stadia.

Frere Town Member of County Assembly (MCA) Charles Kitula says the tender is ready and contractors are set to visit the site of the Mombasa County Stadium upon which construction of the facility will begin “as soon as possible”.

The county intends to completely pull down the dilapidated facility and erect a new one that “meets the international bench marks”.

According to the legislator, the facility will be set up to meet the CAF and Fifa standards.

The county has set aside Sh1.2 billion to  build a new stadium at the spot where the over 50-year-old County Stadium has been standing.

Kitula said: “Mombasa residents will have the facility because we all know how much we need such a facility, and I can assure you by November you’ll see these changes. Already some grass has been put on the field as we look forward to make it even better,” he added.

Talks of rehabilitating the facility has been a tired song sang every year and it remains to be seen if the county will make good its promise this time round.

On the other hand, earlier last month, the Mombasa County Assembly  passed a bill that will enable local football clubs in the region earn an allocation of around Sh12 Million in annual sponsorship from the county.
